Boston Children’s Museum

The Boston Children's Museum selected my Crystalline Entities installation as a featured exhibit for their 2022 CreatedBy Festival, a maker faire designed to get kids excited about STEAM education. Since the installation was originally designed to be accompanied by music, I adapted the concept by adding an interactive mode using computer vision and an infrared camera sensor. I developed the platform using a combination of TouchDesigner and Lightjams.

Using infrared motion-capturing sensors, the installation tracks the position of viewers' hands, letting them control which crystals light up and what color they glow. When activated, each crystal plays a unique resonant note, creating a sound effect akin to wind chimes.

The installation was so well received that it returned to BCM as a featured exhibit for their winter Snowmazing showcase in 2023 and again in 2025. Crystalline Entities, the installation this was adapted from, has its own page.

Client Testimonial

“Damien’s installation added the perfect amount of wonder and whimsy to the space and has inspired us to think about ways we can include interactive installations in our future experiences and programs. Working with Damien was a delight and a pleasure, and I look forward to being able to do so again soon.”
